Does COBRA let me delay Medicare and keep using ICHRA (CHOICE)?
No. COBRA is continuation coverage after active employment or group coverage ends. It does not generally protect your Medicare Part B timing in the same way current job-based coverage can. If you are Medicare-eligible and entering the benefitbay Medicare + ICHRA (CHOICE) path, you must enroll in Parts A and B. You cannot keep COBRA as your own health coverage and use ICHRA (CHOICE) instead of Medicare.
COBRA can look like the group health plan you had while working because it often uses the same network and plan design. But the Medicare rules are different. Current active-employment coverage is tied to work that is still happening. COBRA is a continuation arrangement after work or coverage has ended or changed.
For Medicare enrollment, that distinction is critical. The Special Enrollment Period for Part B starts when you stop working or lose job-based coverage, even if you elect COBRA. Waiting until COBRA ends can mean missing the window that matters for Part B.
The purpose of this employer path is to move the Medicare beneficiary from the prior group or individual health plan into Medicare. ICHRA (CHOICE) then pays eligible Medicare coverage premiums through the approved benefitbay process. COBRA does not change that sequence.
If your spouse or children need COBRA because they are not Medicare-eligible, that can be a separate household decision. Your own Medicare path remains Parts A and B first, then your Medicare coverage selection and ICHRA (CHOICE) setup.
The benefitbay Medicare Team uses these details to make the Medicare beneficiary’s Medicare timeline clear and to identify family coverage questions that need HR or another coverage resource.
Do not wait for COBRA to end before dealing with Medicare. Do not choose COBRA as a substitute for Medicare when your employer is moving you to ICHRA (CHOICE). Start the Medicare process early enough to make Parts A and B active before the old group coverage ends.
